Ray Wins Gold, But KD Steals The Show

Last night Australia's best and brightest television talent gathered in Melbourne for the TV Week Logie Awards. For those outside of Australia, the Logies - named for John Logie Baird - are the Australian equivalent of the Emmy Awards.
TV stalwart, Ray Meagher, who for the last 25 years has starred nightly in the role of gruff Alf Stewart on Home & Away, took out the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian TV in a shock win, with most pundits expecting Packed to the Rafters star Rebecca Gibney to take out her second consecutive Gold Logie.
In his heartfelt acceptance speach, Meagher gently poked fun at the fact his last win was in a chook raffle in 1968, and that as with the last time he won a prize, he was sure people would say he had rigged it this time too. Thanks to the ground swell of sentimental support - and an extremely active Facebook and Twitter campaign - Meagher won the Gold the first time he had been nominated.
But the night belonged to Canadian Songstress KD Lange. A last minute replacement for the Britians Got Talent runner up Susan Boyle, Lange took the stage in a black suit minus shoes and showed the Australian public why she remains as popular today as she has always been.
In a haunting, spine tingling rendition of Leonard Cohens Hallelujah, KD held the audience spellbound, the song ending in a stand ovation that went on for several minutes.
For my generation the "definitive" version of this song has always been Jeff Buckley's, although for me that changed in January 2009 when I was lucky enough to hear Leonard Cohen perform the song during his concert at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Last night, Lange showed she was up there with the best of the best in performing this song.
While the media in Australia had made no bones of how disappointed they were that Susan Boyle had cancelled her appearance, I can't help but think it all turned out for the best.
My thanks to deniecares2 on youtube who posted the video I've embedded in this update.
I'd love your feedback on what you though of KD's performance or the Logies in general.
