Family First Want The Sexy Preferences
July 28th 2010 03:22
During her election launch yesterday, Australian Sex Party President, Fiona Pattern sent the cat amongst the conservative pidgeons by announcing that the Family First Party had made an approach to the Australian Sex Party to secure a preference deal in the senate.
The Australian Sex Party, who is known to support Gay Marriage, euthanasia, abortion and the removal of religion from Australia politics seems to be at the exact opposite end of the political spectrum from Family First who oppose Gay Marriage and Civil Unions, abortion, prostitution, pornography and are also staunch supporters of Internet Censorship.
On first glance it seems they would make strange political bedfellows and on second and third glance you can't help wondering who in Family First came up with the idea. There are a variety of political parties closer in ideology to Family First, The Australian Sex Party wouldn't be my first choice.
Ms Patten said at the launch that there would be no preference deal with the political party founded by Pentecostal Minister Andrew Evans.
Family First were on the back foot yesterday trying to clarify the alleged preference deal, with sitting member Nick Xenophon and candidate Bob Day both denying any knowledge of the proposed preference deal.
Trying to make a silk purse out of sows ear, Family First confirmed they had agreed to a "no preference deal" with The Australian Sex Party and that while not being given last preference - that honour has gone to the Greens - they wouldn't be far ahead.
This situation highlights the need to know exactly where your preferences are going on August 21. I'm sure Family First's supporters would have been honoured to find out their preferences could have gone to a party that advocates getting the politicians out of Australia's bedrooms.
While Family First have said they discussed preference deals with all the political parties, it's not hard to see what that actually is. PR Spin to control damage done to the parties reputation. To have even approached a party so opposed to their own political desires shows a distinct lack of consideration on the part of the party.
As Senator Xenophon said when questioned about the annoucement:
"I think Family First will have a bit of explaining to do to their constituents about this one, it's a case of not being desperate and dateless, but desperate and preferenceless.
"This preference deal is not something that genuine Family First supporters should take lying down."
