Are women still considered to be either MADONNAS or WHORES?

April 26th 2008 05:04

It's funny how after all these centuries, women are still often subjected to the dichotomy of the Madonna/ whore complex.

Even though the boundaries have become somewhat blurred, many guys still, consciously or unconsciously, classify women as either the 'marriagble' or 'fuckable' type.

While talking with one of my friends, he admitted that 'there are the girls who are really hot, alays up for anything, willing to have fun with you whenever. They drink and swear and can behave like one of the guys....but with obvious benefits.' What he DIDN'T explicitly state , but nevetheless implied, is that this is the type of girl good for a fun time, but not one you want to bring home to your mother.

I asked yet another friend of mine a similar question, this time asking him to specify a girls he WOULD like to take home to mum. He turned out to be a surprisingly traditional guy. basically, he mentioned that a girl he wants to date should be nice and pretty, one who does not dress in 'revealing and slutty' clothing, and one who is big on family values and would one day like to have children. Intelligence was also rated quite highly. But it was still funny to hear how even guys today, who claim not to really care about girls' being virginal and innocent still want to find a woman as close to that ideal as possible, keeping to the realms of 21st Century realism.

On the topic of a woman's sexual past, many guys have said it doesn't matter if the girl has already slept with a few people, as long as she has no had as many partners as them. They even put numbers on it! For some, 3 was the max, as 'you don't want to get a disease...and you don't want her to be loose'. (I was horrified, trust me. We don't discuss these types of subjects anymore.)

However, my boyfriend said he could not care less, as long as the guys were all BEFORE him. That's a pretty decent view

Concerning dress styles, similar codes of conduct still apply. Guys love looking at girls who reveal as much skin as possible, but at the end of the day, they like their partner to reveal that much ONLY to them. Classy dress seems the go when it comes to girls getting respect. Of course, to be classy a girl does not have to hide EVERYHTING, just tastefully highlight her assets in a way that would not be deemed as 'too slutty'. Not being a guy, I can't judge this properly, but as a girl having lots of guy friends, I am often exposed to their opinions.

It's getting better, that is true, with women's sexuality becoming a little less harshly judged but to get that equality with men, we still have to change the opinions of many men AND women around the world.

You should know that if I hadn't clicked on your title I would have thought that you were upholding this problematic binary by reiterating such a question without any disclaimer. Perhaps consider a title change?

I'm sure that you would agree that the W and S words are derogatory and should not be applied to women under any circumstances? My philosophy is that if you don't want people to refer to other people as these, don't use them at all!

To be fair Caroline did put the S word in quotation marks to indicate that they were not her sentiments. The capitals in the title also indicate likewise.

I think this is a good article that addresses men's continued objectification of women. The marrying type or the fuckable type. Hmm. Why can't a woman be both?

Men are gross. That's all there is is to it. They are just gross.

well, that was irritating, Anonymous.

I'm very happy with women being as 'slutty' as they want, as long as they're honest with themselves. I get irritated when men or women create a facade of themselves as sexually liberated, but really, they're hiding their fears and insecurities.

also, I'm in favour of turning 'slutty' into a positive word. My girlfriend and I try to use it in a complimentary manner, which is remarkably powerful.

YAY I GOT A MENTION!

I reckon there should be nothing wrong with a woman being crazy and wild, but then when you take them home to mum they are 'controlled' or whatever.

I think thats more to do with parents than how I view women
